What is Chestnut Tiramisu?
Chestnut Tiramisu is a Korean convenience-store twist on the classic Italian dessert, inspired by Culinary Class Wars. Instead of mascarpone and ladyfingers, layers of latte-soaked cream bun and wholewheat biscuit are topped with a light chestnut cream, shaved milk chocolate, and toasted granola with chestnut pieces.
Key Ingredient?
Chestnut
It lends a unique, rich, and earthy flavor that sets this variation apart from traditional tiramisu. Here’s why chestnut works so well in this dessert:
Natural Sweetness and Creaminess: Chestnuts have a naturally sweet, nutty flavor that pairs beautifully with the other tiramisu ingredients, like mascarpone, espresso, and cocoa powder. Their creamy texture, especially when pureed, adds a smooth consistency to the dessert.
Distinctive Flavor Profile: The earthy, subtly sweet flavor of chestnuts gives the tiramisu a warm, autumnal twist, perfect for a seasonal or holiday version. It creates a depth that contrasts with the coffee and chocolate elements.
Complementary Texture: When blended into a paste or puree, chestnuts integrate seamlessly with mascarpone (or cream in this case), making the tiramisu layers extra rich and smooth.
Unique Variation: Chestnut tiramisu offers a fresh take on a classic Italian dessert, making it both memorable and innovative.
Using chestnut as the main ingredient creates a delightful, nutty richness, turning it into a dessert that feels simultaneously luxurious and cozy.
FAQs
What If I Don’t Have It?
See substitution suggestions above. For this recipe, the combination of all other ingredients is mandatory to create this flavorful dish.
What is Bun Digestive?
The bread of the cream buns, which gets dipped into the latte like the wholewheat biscuits, much like the ladyfingers in a traditional Tiramisu.
Do the brands of ingredients need to be the same?
They do not. I went to five different stores searching for each thing to replicate the recipe on Culinary Class Wars as close as possible to achieve a similar taste that was given to the judges.
Babybel - Cheese replacement
Diget - Wholewheat Biscuit
Ghana - Milk Chocolate
Where can I find these products?
Since I live in Canada, there aren’t convenience stores that are comparable to the ones in Asia with a wide, fun variety of things. The next best thing for me was to head to several Korean Supermarkets to source these ingredients. The Cream Buns were the most difficult, as I could only find them at a couple of Korean supermarkets that sold them individually or in packs of 3 in the frozen section.
Can I use raw Chestnuts?
You can, but they will need more preparation than the ones sold in snack packaging. Raw Chestnuts will need to be peeled by scoring with an “X” and boiling for 10-15 minutes until skin loosens.
Does Babybel Cheese melt?
Yes, Babybel Original cheese can melt, but it doesn’t melt as smoothly as other cheeses like cheddar or mozzarella. Babybel is a semi-hard cheese, and its higher moisture and fat content allow it to soften with heat. However, because it’s a mild and firm cheese, it may retain some shape and become gooey rather than completely liquefy.
To melt Babybel more effectively, try grating or cutting it into smaller pieces and heating it slowly. This works well if you’re adding it to a hot dish or using it in grilled cheese, where the lower heat can help it become creamy without separating.
